Wimbledon organizers will announce the cancellation of the grasscourt Grand Slam this week due to the pandemic coronavirus, German Tennis Federation vice president Dirk Hordorff told Sky Sports.
All England Lawn Tennis Club officials said earlier on June 29 July 12 event would be played behind closed doors and the postponement was not without significant risk and difficulty.
“Wimbledon said they will have a meeting of the board next Wednesday and will put up the final decision,” Hordorff told Sky Sport Germany.
postponing Tokyo Olympics opened a two-week window in the tennis calendar in July / August, but it is less likely it will be possible for Wimbledon, thati has two indoor courts and can not be held end of last summer.
French Open organizers stunned the tennis world by unilaterally postponing the clay court Grand Slam at Roland Garros from May to late September because of the pandemic.
The French Tennis Federation (FFT) has come under fire for tennis players from around the world to the lack of communication that the new dates conflict with several events already on the calendar.
