Postponed Olympic Games will be canceled if not pandemic: Head Games


Tokyo Deferrals 2020 Olympic Games will be canceled if the pandemic is not controlled by coronavirus next year, said chairman of the organizing committee.

The pandemic has already forced a one-year period of the Games, which are reprogrammed to open July 23, 2021, but Tokyo 2020 President Yoshiro Mori said no more postponement was possible.

In an interview with sports daily Nikkan Japan, Mori was adamant when asked if the Olympic Games could be delayed until 2022 if the pandemic remains a threat to the year next, answering “no.”

“In this case, it is canceled,” Mori said.

Mori said the Games were canceled previously only in times of war and rapport to the fight against coronavirus “fighting an invisible enemy.”

If the virus is successfully contained, “we will hold the Olympic Games in peace next summer,” he added.

Under strong pressure from athletes and sports associations, the Japanese organizers and the International Olympic Committee agreed in March to a one-year deferral of the Games.
